Anuradhapura

Explore ancient Anuradhapura, home to sacred Buddhist sites, massive stupas, historic monasteries and some of Sri Lanka’s oldest monuments.

Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka’s most important ancient cities and a major destination for Buddhist pilgrims and cultural travellers. The vast archaeological area contains stupas, monasteries, sacred trees and ruins spread across a large landscape.

Major places to visit

Important sites include Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya, Thuparamaya, Jetavanaramaya, Abhayagiri and Isurumuniya. Because the attractions are spread out, visitors generally travel between them rather than exploring the entire area on foot.

Visiting the sacred sites

Anuradhapura remains an active religious destination, so modest clothing and respectful behaviour are expected at temples and sacred areas. Comfortable footwear, sun protection and plenty of water are useful for exploring the site.
