Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka’s renowned surfing destination, with world-class waves, laid-back beaches and a popular east coast atmosphere.

Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka’s best-known surfing destination on the southeast coast, attracting surfers as well as travellers looking for beaches, cafés and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. The surrounding area also offers lagoons, wildlife and quieter beaches.

Surfing in Arugam Bay

The main surf season generally runs from around April or May through October, with conditions varying between breaks. Arugam Point, Pottuvil Point, Peanut Farm and other nearby breaks offer different conditions for experienced surfers.

 

Beaches and activities

Beyond surfing, visitors can explore nearby beaches, take lagoon trips, visit Pottuvil and enjoy local seafood. Wildlife excursions to places such as Kumana National Park can also be arranged from the area.
