Dambulla

Visit Dambulla for its UNESCO-listed cave temple complex, ancient Buddha statues, painted murals and important Buddhist heritage.

Dambulla is best known for its UNESCO-listed cave temple complex, one of Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. The town is also conveniently located between Kandy and the Cultural Triangle destinations of Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa.

Dambulla Cave Temple

The cave complex contains Buddha statues, religious artwork and painted surfaces within several rock-cut caves. Visitors need to climb a short but noticeable uphill route to reach the temple entrance.

Dambulla as a travel stop

Dambulla works well as part of a Cultural Triangle itinerary, particularly when travelling between Kandy and Sigiriya. The nearby market and town area also provide a glimpse of everyday local life.
